On April 7, 2024, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Houston Texas South Temple at the 194th Annual General Conference. It will be the second temple in the Houston area and the ninth in the state. The Houston Texas Temple was dedicated in August 2000 and rededicated in April 2018 following flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. Missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ first visited Texas in 1843, and membership growth has increased rapidly in recent decades with 210,000 members in 2000 and more than 385,000 members and around 750 congregations in 2024.
